English Language Development (ELD) is a class that is provided for students who speak languages other than English in the home. Research has shown that it takes 7-10 years for learners to develop academic proficiency in a new language. English learners (ELs) may need more help developing their vocabulary, grammar and speaking and writing skill in English. We also work with ELs in their Language Arts, Math and Science classes.
Minnesota has adopted the WIDA Standards for EL students and teachers (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment). With these standards, there are 6 levels of Language Proficiency. Each level is described by "Can-Do" descriptors. These descriptors tell what students can do for each level of language proficiency. You can download a free copy of the Grade 6-8 Descriptors by going to the WIDA website.
