GEAR UP is a seven-year federal grant through the U.S. Department of Education to increase the number of Minneapolis School District students to enroll and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP will follow a cohort of current 7th and 8th graders each year through 12th grade. GEAR UP will serve a total of 2,560 students from about 12 middle schools through high school graduation, to prepare and assist them to successfully enroll in college.

The Objectives of GEAR UP are the following:

  • Increase students’ academic performance and prepare them for postsecondary education.
  • Increase the percentage of high school graduation and enrollment in postsecondary education.
  • Increase students’ and families’ knowledge of postsecondary options, preparation, and how to plan and pay for them.
  • Increase professional development opportunities for GEAR UP schools’ principals, teachers, and staff.
