Introduction to Independent Living

About Ms. O'Brien

My family is originally from Chicago, I grew up in Wisconsin, and  have lived in Minneapolis for the past 16 years.

I began my college journey at MCTC before transferring to the University of Minnesota where I received a Bachelor's in History and a Masters in Education.
I teach Independent Living, the class is taught from the perspective of preparing our students to be successful, independant individuals for life. We cover units that range from healthy relationships, career preparation, financial literacy to mixing it up in the  kitchen.

I have been at Anwatin for 3 years now. I first started at Anwatin as a student teacher and fell in love with it so much I couldn’t wait to come back.  My favorite thing about this school is the community that is built between our amazing students and staff.  Daily I watch people from all walks of life come together to create beautiful things. Our diversity is truly our greatest strength. From an early age- due in large part to my parents, but also my schooling and community I have been passionate about equity: racial, socioeconomic, gender, and sexuality to name a few. I believe that Anwatin is a school where students are respected for who they are, while also receiving the special support that all unique individuals require.
Outside of school my favorite activities include being politically engaged, I enjoy working on campaigns. I love to cook. LOVE it. Which my boyfriend loves too. I come from a big loud Chicago Irish family and they are the most important thing in the world to me.  I always look forward to the chance to travel, New Orleans remains my favorite U.S. city to visit. When I am at home I like to snuggle with my dog, Mabel.
